Muslims across Bangladesh are observing the holy night of Shab-e-Barat tonight, a night of forgiveness and blessings. Known as the Night of Fortune, believers engage in prayers, recitation of the Holy Quran, and seek forgiveness for past sins.
Shab-e-Barat, also called “Lailatul Barat” in Arabic, is observed on the night of the 14th of Sha’ban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar. This sacred night is believed to be a time when Allah’s mercy and blessings are bestowed upon His followers. In Bangladesh, the observance falls tonight, Friday.
On this revered night, devout Muslims perform Nafl prayers, recite the Holy Quran, and engage in Zikr (remembrance of Allah). They pray for forgiveness from past sins and seek blessings for the future.
Many households prepare special delicacies like Halwa-Ruti, which are shared with relatives, neighbors, and the needy. After sunset, people also visit graveyards to offer prayers for the departed souls of their loved ones.
To mark the occasion, Islamic Foundation Bangladesh has organized special programs at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, including sermons, Quran recitations, prayers, and Hamd-Naat (religious songs) that will continue until late at night.
Shab-e-Barat is also seen as a prelude to the holy month of Ramadan. With Ramadan following the month of Sha’ban, spiritual preparations for fasting and devotion begin from this night.
Prime Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus extended heartfelt greetings to the Muslim community in Bangladesh and worldwide. In his message, he urged everyone to avoid injustice, conflicts, and superstitions while promoting the peaceful spirit of Islam in personal, social, and national life.
Liberty News’ national correspondent states that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has banned fireworks and crackers in the capital to maintain the sanctity and peaceful observance of Shab-e-Barat. According to a DMP press release issued on Thursday, the ban will be effective from Friday evening till Saturday morning, prohibiting the sale, carrying, and use of all explosives in Dhaka.
