Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said the government is focused on arresting top drug traffickers, not just carriers, to root out the country’s drug problem.

Speaking at a donation cheque distribution event for private rehabilitation centres on Wednesday—held ahead of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking—he stated, “Drug and corruption are the two most serious problems for the country. Arresting the godfathers of drug trafficking is more important than just holding the carriers.”

Responding to queries about law enforcers’ involvement in trafficking, he confirmed that a senior official had already been removed for suspected links and would face legal action. “Anyone found involved will be brought to justice,” he added.

The adviser announced that the government is building rehabilitation centres in seven divisions at a cost of Tk 1,400 crore and thanked private rehab facilities for their support.

He noted that illegal drugs like Phensedyl and Yaba are being smuggled from India and Myanmar. “We have asked both countries to dismantle drug factories near our borders,” he said, adding that talks have already been held with their respective authorities.
