Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is set to undergo restructuring and a name change, according to Home Affairs Adviser, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
Home Affairs Adviser, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, revealed on Tuesday that the government is considering a name change and restructuring of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Speaking after a meeting of the Law and Order Advisory Committee at the Secretariat, he stated that discussions on the matter have taken place, and the final decision regarding the new name could be made in the next meeting.
RAB was established in 2004 as a specialized police force to combat top terrorists, criminals, and extremists. However, over time, the force has faced serious allegations, including involvement in the 7 murders in Narayanganj, enforced disappearances, and various human rights violations. These accusations led to the United States imposing sanctions on RAB during the tenure of the Awami League government.
Liberty News’ national correspondent states that an interim government’s investigation commission on enforced disappearances stated that out of 400 cases analyzed, RAB was found to be involved in 172 instances. This restructuring and name change are part of efforts to address these concerns and reform the elite force.
