A Kushtia court has ordered five men to jail for allegedly raping a woman after restraining and assaulting her husband in Bheramara upazila on Saturday night.
The District Judicial Magistrate issued the jail order on Sunday after police presented the accused before the court, said Abdur Rob Talukder, officer-in-charge of Bheramara Police Station.
The accused are Kalu Pramanik (46), Murshid Sheikh (45), Titu Mondal alias Tipu (42), Ejazul (42), and van driver Rubel Ali (24). All are residents of Bheramara upazila.
Police arrested the suspects from various locations across Bheramara early Sunday following overnight raids. The operation was carried out by a joint team of Bheramara police and the district Detective Branch, based on a call made to the national emergency helpline 999.
According to police, the incident occurred around 11:00pm on Saturday in the Baro Mile area. The couple was returning home from work on a rickshaw-van when the accused intercepted them near a litchi orchard. The attackers allegedly beat the husband and tied him up before dragging the woman into the orchard, where 3–4 of them raped her.
Kushtia Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman stated that they received the emergency call from the victim, prompting immediate action. “Based on the woman’s report, five suspects have been arrested,” he said.
The woman is currently receiving medical care.
Additional Superintendent of Police Foisal Ahmed confirmed that a case has been filed against the five under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000.
OC Abdur Rob added that the accused were sent to jail after giving confessional statements in court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
