ICC rejects PCB’s demand to replace match referee Pycroft

Liberty News Desk

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has turned down the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) request to replace match referee Andy Pycroft from the ongoing Asia Cup.

Tensions flared after India defeated Pakistan by seven wickets in a Group A clash in Dubai, where the Indian players walked off without the customary post-match handshake.

The PCB alleged that Pycroft had compromised impartiality by advising Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha not to shake hands with India’s Suryakumar Yadav at the toss. However, the ICC dismissed the claim, clarifying that Pycroft was only relaying instructions from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) officials present at the venue, not acting on behalf of India.

Despite the rejection, the PCB has maintained that it will not participate in matches officiated by the 69-year-old Zimbabwean, who is scheduled to oversee Pakistan’s upcoming game against the UAE.

Meanwhile, Indian news agency PTI quoted a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official defending the Indian players’ conduct. The official noted that handshakes are a matter of sporting courtesy, not a law of the game.

“Look, there is nothing written in the rules of cricket about handshakes with opposing cricketers after the match. Usually, cricketers from both teams shake hands to show respect. That is seen all over the world. But there is no rule for this. So, on what basis is Pakistan complaining?” the BCCI official said.
