Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has instructed law enforcement officials to refrain from making harassing or arbitrary arrests, emphasizing that only individuals with proven allegations should be detained.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, organized to mark Police Week, IGP Baharul Alam warned against the misuse of legal processes for personal vendettas.
The police chief noted, “After August 5, many have filed cases with malicious intent—extorting money or harassing individuals. Offenses may have been committed by five or ten people, but cases have been filed listing 300 names. Such an incident even occurred yesterday.”
He confirmed that instructions have already been issued: “No one should be arrested merely to harass. Only those against whom credible evidence is found during investigation will be taken into custody.”
Highlighting challenges within the force, the IGP added, “We often face undue pressures—requests to arrest or release specific individuals, or to grant awards. However, we are committed to following the rule of law.” He did not specify who made such requests.
Addressing the general public, Baharul Alam urged citizens to point out any mistakes made by the police, stating, “When someone approaches to file a case, police have no authority to verify its truthfulness at the time. Cases are often pre-written by complainants and must be registered immediately. Authenticity is verified later through investigations.”
He concluded, “Our duty is to uncover the truth and submit verified cases to the court, ensuring justice is served based on facts rather than allegations.”
