The Narcotics Control Department has destroyed an illegal poppy field in Parbatipur, Dinajpur, during an operation conducted on February 27, 2025. The operation aimed to eradicate poppy cultivation, which is banned in Bangladesh.
The Narcotics Control Department in Dinajpur carried out an operation on February 27, 2025, to destroy an illegal poppy field in the Mollepura village of Durga Pur Union, Parbatipur. The raid was led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Khalid Bin Mansur, with support from Assistant Director Mohammad Nazir Ullah and his team from the Narcotics Control Department.
During the operation, poppy plants were destroyed on the land of Mohammad Makbul Hossain (70), the son of the late Fazle Rahman. The poppy plants were found to be cultivated with the intent of producing opium, which is a precursor to dangerous drugs like heroin.
Assistant Commissioner Khalid Bin Mansur emphasized that opium derived from poppy plants is used in the production of deadly drugs, and poppy cultivation is completely banned in Bangladesh.
Makbul Hossain, the landowner, explained that he had planted the poppy plants with the intention of producing poppy seeds for culinary use, unaware that poppies could be used for drug production. He assured authorities that he would refrain from growing poppies in the future and would also raise awareness among others.
The Narcotics Control Department officials have cautioned local residents about the dangers of cultivating poppies and stated that strict measures would be taken against such activities in the future.
