The Indian state of Meghalaya has enforced a night curfew along its border with Sylhet to prevent illegal intrusion as well as cross-border smuggling of goods like cattle, betel nuts, and dried fish.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the district magistrate of Meghalaya imposed the curfew starting Friday. The curfew will be in effect daily from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM and is set to remain in force for two months.

The order applies to areas stretching up to one kilometer from the international border’s zero line on the Indian side. Authorities say the move aims to prevent unauthorized border crossings and curb the smuggling of items including cattle, betel leaves, dried fish, bidi, cigarettes, and tea leaves.

In addition to the curfew, reports suggest Indian authorities have already pushed back over a hundred individuals—labeled as “Bangladeshis”—through various border routes in recent days.

Officials have stated that such measures are necessary to maintain border security and control illicit trade activities, which have reportedly been on the rise in recent months.
