At least eight people, including two children, were killed and 35 others injured in Indian missile strikes targeting nine locations across Pakistan late Tuesday night, deepening the ongoing military crisis between the two nuclear-armed nations.

India launched missile strikes from within its airspace targeting several Pakistani areas, including Kotli, Bahawalpur, Muridke, Bagh, and Muzaffarabad, according to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The attacks, which occurred around 1:00 a.m., have been labeled “cowardly” by Pakistan, which has vowed a strong military response.

Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director General of ISPR, confirmed the casualties and damages. In Bahawalpur’s Ahmedpur region, a missile struck a mosque, killing one child and injuring 12 people. In Kotli, two civilians were killed and a mosque sustained severe damage. A separate strike in Muzaffarabad hit a major road, though immediate damage details remain unclear.

Two Pakistani citizens remain missing in the aftermath of the attacks. Pakistani forces have reportedly launched counteroffensives by land and air, according to the ISPR.

India’s Ministry of Defence stated that the strikes were part of “Operation Sindoor,” targeting alleged terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir. Indian officials claimed that no military facilities were deliberately hit during the operation.

The strikes follow heightened tensions stemming from the April 22 terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir’s Pahalgam region, which left 26 dead. India accused Pakistan of backing the assailants, a charge Islamabad has denied.

As both sides exchange military blows and diplomatic ties deteriorate, global powers and observers continue to call for immediate de-escalation and a return to dialogue.
