Inqilab Moncho has demanded the formation of a special judicial tribunal within the next 24 hours to ensure a fair and speedy trial of the murder of July uprising frontliner and the organisation’s spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, warning of continued street protests if the government fails to respond.
Inqilab Moncho member secretary Abdullah Al Jaber made the demand at a press conference held in front of the National Museum in Dhaka’s Shahbagh on Monday (22 December).
Jaber also called for the involvement of international intelligence agencies such as the FBI or Scotland Yard if domestic agencies prove ineffective.
Addressing the conference, Jaber said the killing of Osman Hadi is a “major test for post-July Bangladesh” and cautioned that public trust in the state would erode further if visible and effective judicial action is not taken.
He said the state must seek international assistance if necessary to ensure a credible investigation and trial.
He noted that Bangladesh has previously sought international support in sensitive cases and said the same approach should be followed in the murder of a key political figure like Hadi.
Leaders of Inqilab Moncho claimed at the press conference that Osman Hadi played a significant role behind the apparent stability of the current government system and warned that similar incidents could recur if his murder is not properly tried.
Jaber alleged that attempts are being made to push the murder out of mainstream discussion, saying that sidelining Hadi from the “main subject” would conceal deeper problems of the state. He stressed that state decisions should be taken with this murder at the centre.
Referring to a recent security analysts’ meeting chaired by the Chief Adviser, Jaber said Inqilab Monchi expects a clear announcement within 24 hours regarding the formation of a judicial tribunal and the decision on seeking international assistance.
He also demanded that the authorities disclose to the public what steps have been taken so far in the investigation.
Issuing a stern warning to the interim government, he said no elections should be held until the trial of Osman Hadi’s murder is confirmed.
“The government will not be allowed to evade responsibility by holding elections,” he said, adding that Inqilab Moncho will continue its street movement if prompt and credible judicial steps are not taken.
Jaber also questioned the role of Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, alleging that despite delivering an emotional speech at Hadi’s funeral, he has yet to take a clear position on ensuring justice.
He demanded clarification on who is obstructing the investigation and why the government is failing to take a firm stance.
