Meta is experimenting with a new ‘Dislike’ button for Instagram comments, allowing users to secretly express dislike for irrelevant or disliked comments without making it publicly visible.

In a bid to make comments more user-friendly, Meta is testing a new ‘Dislike’ button on Instagram, which allows users to express discontent with certain comments. This feature, currently in its experimental phase, will enable users to mark comments they find irrelevant or disagreeable without others knowing. The disliked comments will be ranked lower in visibility, appearing further down the post.

Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, confirmed the test, stating the goal is to offer a way for users to privately signal dislike, without any public display of dislike or statistics. He also mentioned that the dislike signals could potentially influence the ranking of comments in the future, with comments receiving more dislikes being pushed lower.

This feature mirrors similar systems used by platforms like Reddit, where downvotes are used to organize comments. However, it is uncertain when the feature will be fully rolled out to all users.

Liberty News tech correspondent states that this update follows Instagram’s recent push to attract users from TikTok, including extending the length of Reels videos and introducing a new video editing app, ‘Edits.’
