BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has warned that Bangladesh is heading into deep uncertainty as the current interim government disregards essential democratic processes, rendering economic policies and national budgets ineffective.

Speaking at a citizen dialogue titled “Policy Reforms and the Upcoming National Budget” organized by Nagorik Platform at a hotel in Dhaka’s Gulshan on Monday, Amir Khasru voiced strong concerns over the government’s approach to governance.

“The interim government is doing everything except holding elections. As a result, the country is sliding into uncertainty. In such a climate, neither the budget nor economic policies will be effective,” said the former commerce minister.

The event featured CPD Distinguished Fellow Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya as the keynote presenter, while Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, special assistant to the chief adviser, attended as the chief guest.

Highlighting the democratic struggle, Khasru said, “People have sacrificed over the past 14 to 15 years to bring Bangladesh back to the democratic path through elections. In July, we saw a strong movement for this. Yet today, the interim government is bypassing the election process entirely.”

Khasru also criticized the excessive regulatory grip on business operations in Bangladesh. “Compared to other countries, Bangladesh has far more control. History shows that excessive control enables looting. The more control you impose, the more corruption you invite. We must break free from this,” he warned.

Proposing a future direction, he said Bangladesh must shift toward a more open economic model. “We are open for business — that should be the economic vision for tomorrow’s Bangladesh,” he concluded.

The dialogue highlighted the urgent need for democratic restoration and economic reform, as experts warned that political uncertainty continues to threaten sustainable development.
