The interim government is set to issue an official gazette declaring Noor Mustafa, a Rohingya teenager and madrasa student, as a “July Martyr” for sacrificing his life during last year’s anti-fascist uprising.
Information Adviser Mahfuj Alam first proposed the recognition in an advisory council meeting held on 22 June. He confirmed the development in a Facebook post on Wednesday afternoon, stating that the July Mass Uprising Directorate is actively working to finalise the recognition, and a notification will be issued soon.
The post was later shared by Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
On 5 August last year, 17-year-old Noor Mustafa joined a demonstration against the then Awami League-led fascist regime in front of the Eidgaon Police Station in Cox’s Bazar. During the protest, pro-fascist forces opened fire on demonstrators. Noor sustained bullet wounds and died the following day while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Noor Mustafa’s father, Shafiul Alam, had entered Bangladesh from Myanmar in 1993 and settled permanently in the Eidgaon area of Cox’s Bazar. Noor was born in Bangladesh and was a tenth-grade student at Darus Salam Dakhil Madrasa at the time of his death.
