Nazmul Haque, Barishal Correspondent: The strike of intern doctors at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMC) entered its third consecutive day on Tuesday (August 19). Starting in the morning, the interns continued their work abstention and held a human chain protest in front of the hospital around 12:30 pm, demanding workplace security and the arrest of those responsible for attacking doctors.

On Sunday, a clash broke out between the protesting healthcare reform activists and hospital doctors, officers, and staff. During the incident, brickbats were thrown, injuring indoor medical officer Dr. Dilip Kumar.

Earlier, on Thursday, hospital staff and the activists had engaged in a chase-and-counter chase. Following these incidents, intern doctors launched an indefinite strike from Sunday to protest, demanding security at their workplace and the arrest of the attackers.

The strike has severely disrupted healthcare services at the hospital for the past three days. Patients are being deprived of proper treatment, with both indoor and outdoor services crippled.

Dr. Shakhawat Hossain Soikat, president of the Mid-Level Doctors’ Association of SBMC, said, “Although the strike is ongoing, we have kept emergency services operational. At the request of the hospital director, our doctors are handling duties in both indoor and outdoor departments. But if there is no security, how can we continue working?”

Hospital Director Brigadier General Dr. AKM Moshihul Munir said, “Emergency services are functioning normally. After the attack, doctors had initially left their workplaces out of fear. Later, police security was deployed to ensure emergency care. Discussions are underway to resolve the issue. We hope the intern doctors will return to work very soon.”
