Former ministers Hasanul Haq Inu and Rashed Khan Menon have been remanded for three more days in connection with the murder of Anwar Hossain Patuari during the anti-discrimination student movement.
On Monday, February 17, the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court, led by GM Farhan Ishtiaq, granted a 3-day remand for former Minister and JSD president Hasanul Haq Inu and Workers’ Party president Rashed Khan Menon. This decision comes in connection with the murder of Anwar Hossain Patuari, who was killed during the anti-discrimination student protests.
Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, CID Inspector Nasir Uddin Sarkar, had sought a 5-day remand for both leaders, claiming that they had met with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and allegedly directed the shooting during the protests. The public prosecutor, Omar Farooq Faruqi, supported the request for remand during the hearing.
In their defense, Inu’s lawyer argued that at the time of the movement, Inu was not an MP and had never given any order to kill. The lawyer added that Inu, a renowned former footballer, had joined the Liberation War in 1971 after giving up his football career. He is a senior politician and is elderly, requesting bail on these grounds.
Liberty News’ court correspondent states that the case relates to the shooting of Anwar Hossain Patuari on August 5 during the protests in Mirpur Golchattar. His father, Al Amin Patuari, filed a murder case at the Mirpur Model Police Station. The investigation into the killing continues as the accused leaders remain under police custody for further questioning.
