Former ministers Hasanul Haq Inu, Rashed Khan Menon, and Dipu Moni have been granted a four-day remand in connection with the murder of Obaidul Islam during an anti-discrimination movement in the capital’s Jatrabari.

On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza’s court approved a four-day remand for three prominent political figures—Hasanul Haq Inu, Rashed Khan Menon, and Dipu Moni—who have been implicated in the killing of Obaidul Islam during the anti-discrimination protests last year. The remand was granted after the accused were presented in court, where the prosecution requested a seven-day remand for further investigation.

The case stems from an incident on August 4, 2024, when a group of leaders from the Awami League and the 14-party alliance opened fire on a crowd near the Kazla petrol pump in Jatrabari. This attack led to the death of Obaidul Islam, who was shot during the violence. In response, Obaidul’s relatives filed a case, accusing 58 individuals, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Transport Minister Obaidul Quader, of being involved in the incident.

During the court proceedings, the public prosecutor for Dhaka, Omar Farooq Faruki, argued in favor of the remand, stating that further detention was necessary to conduct a thorough investigation. However, the defense lawyers filed petitions for the cancellation of the remand and requested bail, though they did not present their arguments during the hearing.

Liberty News’ court correspondent states that After considering both sides, the court ruled in favor of a four-day remand for each of the accused, allowing law enforcement authorities additional time to investigate the charges.
