It is quite astonishing to see Apple’s operating system running on any Nokia phone. However, this impossible feat has been accomplished by a hacker. By inserting the parts of an iPhone SE 3 into the case of a Windows phone, the Nokia Lumia 1020, he created a unique hybrid smartphone.
The Lumia phones gained immense popularity for their colorful polycarbonate cases and beautifully curved displays. The Lumia 1020, in particular, was famous for its 41 MP sensor camera. This hybrid phone uses only the case, front glass of the Lumia, while the internal components are from the iPhone SE 3, running on Apple’s A15 Bionic chip and iOS 18.3.1, just like a regular iPhone.
Upon turning on the phone, the iOS interface appears, which is the complete opposite of the Windows phone’s live tiles. This device is so closely integrated with the iPhone that it receives iOS updates, supports 5G, even works with Apple AirPlay services. The only things that don’t work are wireless charging and Apple Pay.
The hybrid device has been created with remarkable precision. The front glass of the Lumia has been re-laminated to accommodate the LCD display of the iPhone SE 3. The iPhone’s selfie camera has been carefully installed into the Lumia phone. Even the buttons are in their original places, the Lumia’s camera shutter button is now linked with the volume button. The camera shutter button will work for taking photos, even if it’s not in use, it can be repurposed as an extra volume down button.
Even more surprising is that the massive camera bump of the Lumia 1020 remains, but instead of the 41 MP PureView sensor, it houses the 12 MP camera of the iPhone SE 3. Beneath it is a transparent Touch ID sensor, which works as a fingerprint scanner. Back in the Lumia era, when fingerprint scanners were not available, this is a fascinating addition for today’s standards.
The interesting thing about this hybrid device is that at first glance, it looks like the phone has a micro-USB port. However, a closer inspection reveals that it’s actually Apple’s Lightning port, hidden inside a micro-USB shell.
This project is not just a theoretical concept but a fully functional device. The creator of the device says that it has 93% battery life, good signal strength, can be used as a secondary phone.
The project can be viewed as a fusion of two different design philosophies. The Nokia Lumia was once popular for photography, while the iPhone SE 3’s design is simple and modern, resembling the iPhone 6 design with minimal changes.
This project was not created for practical purposes. It was developed experimentally purely out of curiosity. The creator of this strange device is known on the social media platform Reddit as ‘OceanDepth 95028’.
