Iran fighting alone against Israel

Iran is confronting Israel alone without regional or international backing, according to Middle East expert Lina Khatib from Chatham House, a London-based think tank.

“Iran is battling it out alone,” Khatib told Al Jazeera, adding that even Russia is unlikely to step in. She noted that Moscow did not support Iran when Israel destroyed Russian-supplied air defence systems last year or when Syria’s Bashar al-Assad, a key Iranian ally, lost power.

“Russia will likely limit its support to strongly worded statements and try to position itself as a neutral mediator,” she said.

Meanwhile, the death toll from recent Israeli attacks on Iran has surpassed 220, including at least 70 women and children. Among the dead are the intelligence chief of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and two other senior generals, killed during airstrikes on Sunday.
