Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has firmly rejected any negotiations with the United States, responding to President Donald Trump’s calls for talks with a blunt message: “Do whatever you wish.”
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has categorically stated that Iran will not engage in any discussions with the United States, following a recent letter from President Donald Trump inviting Iran to negotiate a new nuclear agreement. Speaking to state media on March 12, Pezeshkian warned that Iran would never sit at the negotiating table under threat. “We cannot accept the United States merely giving orders and making threats,” he said. “I will not even talk to you. You may do whatever you like.”
The comments come amid rising tensions between the two nations, with Iran denying receiving any letter from Trump regarding negotiations. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, also criticized the United States, stating that Washington’s goal is not a resolution but to expand its dominance in the region under the guise of negotiations.
Despite Trump’s interest in a new deal with Iran, his administration has maintained its “maximum pressure” campaign, which aims to isolate Iran economically and reduce its oil exports to zero. Trump has stated that Iran could either be dealt with militarily or agree to a deal that ensures Tehran halts its nuclear weapons program.
Iran has consistently denied any intention to develop nuclear weapons, but it has been enriching uranium to 60% purity, which is considered close to the level needed for nuclear arms. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned that Iran’s enrichment activities bring it closer to being capable of producing nuclear weapons, with 90% purity required for weapons-grade uranium.
The ongoing tension between Iran and the US escalated after President Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear agreement with six world powers in 2018, re-imposing sanctions on Iran. Since then, Iran has gradually ramped up its nuclear activities, further straining relations.
Liberty News’ international correspondent states that Pezeshkian’s comments, combined with Trump’s tough stance, suggest that prospects for a diplomatic resolution between the two nations are currently remote, deepening the uncertainty surrounding the future of US-Iran relations.
