Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to take over Gaza and “forcibly relocate” Palestinians, calling it “shocking.”
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei said, “The plan to clear Gaza and forcibly relocate the Palestinian people to neighboring countries is seen as a continuation of the Israeli occupation’s plan to completely annihilate the Palestinian nation, and it is completely unacceptable and condemned.”
On Tuesday, Trump declared, “The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it, too. We’ll own it.”
While speaking alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump discussed “permanently” relocating Palestinians from Gaza.
The plan has sparked controversy among Arab governments and world leaders, with the United Nations warning about “ethnic cleansing” in the Palestinian territory.
On Wednesday, the Trump administration slightly backtracked, with the U.S. top diplomat stating that any relocation of Gazans would be temporary.
Baqaei described Trump’s plan as “an unprecedented attack on the fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.”
He further called on the international community to recognize the Palestinian people’s “right to self-determination” and to liberate them from occupation and apartheid.
