BNP leader Ishraque Hossain has called for the resignation of Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, accusing him of spreading false and misleading information regarding the swearing-in process of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor.
Speaking at a sit-in protest outside Nagar Bhaban on Tuesday, Ishraque alleged that the adviser had violated his oath by making statements that undermined a court verdict. “He has lost the moral right to remain in office,” Ishraque said.
The BNP leader was declared elected mayor by the electoral tribunal, which annulled the results of the DSCC mayoral election held on 1 February 2020. The Election Commission published a revised gazette on 27 April, instructing the Local Government Division to take necessary action.
However, Ishraque claimed that the division is deliberately delaying the oath-taking ceremony by raising legal concerns, such as the potential for a writ petition or questions about the gazette’s validity.
He warned that accepting such justifications could create a dangerous precedent, allowing defeated candidates to delay or block elected officials from taking office.
Ishraque also accused the adviser of attempting to appoint a preferred administrator for personal and political gain, undermining public trust and democratic values.
“The adviser’s comments about DSCC services reflect his inexperience,” Ishraque said. He urged the adviser to respect the court’s decision and refrain from misleading the public.
“He is still young and has a future ahead. Upholding integrity and respecting the people’s mandate should guide his actions,” he added.
