The air conflict between Israel and Iran entered its second week on Friday, with European leaders calling for immediate talks to prevent further regional escalation. The war began last Friday with Israeli strikes aimed at halting Iran’s nuclear ambitions, prompting retaliatory missile and drone attacks from Tehran.
According to Iran’s Human Rights Activists News Agency, Israeli airstrikes have killed 639 people, including senior military officials and nuclear scientists. Iran claims its nuclear program is peaceful, while Israel maintains it is targeting military and nuclear infrastructure.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strikes are meant to defend Israel and could ultimately challenge Iran’s ruling regime, though he added that any regime change would be up to the Iranian people.
Iran has struck both military and civilian targets in Israel, including a hospital. Israel accused Tehran of using cluster munitions to deliberately target civilians. Iran has not responded publicly to the allegation.
As the conflict continues, foreign ministers from the UK, France, and Germany, along with the EU’s top diplomat, are meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in Geneva in a last-ditch diplomatic push. British Foreign Minister David Lammy stressed the urgent need to stop the violence and prevent further instability.
Meanwhile, the United States’ position remains unclear. President Donald Trump has hinted at possible military involvement and is expected to make a decision within two weeks. However, observers note that Trump has used similar timeframes in the past without committing to immediate action.
With the Islamic Republic facing one of the most significant external threats since the 1979 revolution, Iranian activists say the fear of war is preventing large-scale domestic protests despite growing dissatisfaction with the regime.
