In a bid to secure the release of Israeli hostages, Israel has proposed a 45-day temporary ceasefire in exchange for the freedom of Palestinian prisoners, with mediators Egypt and Qatar presenting the offer to Hamas.
Israel has submitted a proposal offering a 45-day truce in return for the release of 10 Israeli hostages held by Palestinian resistance fighters. In exchange, several hundred Palestinian prisoners would be freed, according to a report by AFP. The proposal, brokered by Egypt and Qatar, has been delivered to Hamas, which is currently reviewing the terms.
A senior Hamas official told AFP that the group is willing to release all hostages in exchange for a comprehensive deal involving the cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid.
However, the official accused Israel of hindering progress toward a ceasefire, stating that the obstacle is not the number of prisoners but Israel’s repeated violations of its commitments. “They are continuing the war and obstructing the implementation of previous agreements,” he said.
The proposed plan outlines a framework for a 45-day pause in fighting, during which both sides could engage in negotiations toward a permanent ceasefire. Although Hamas favors a full end to hostilities, it may accept this interim deal to facilitate further dialogue, the official added.
Liberty News’ international correspondent states that Israeli news outlet Ynet reported on Monday that Hamas received a new proposal guaranteeing a second-phase ceasefire negotiation. Under this deal, the group would release 10 living hostages in exchange for US-backed assurances that Israel would enter talks for an extended truce.
