Israeli airstrikes targeting multiple military and nuclear facilities around Tehran have reportedly killed Major General Hossein Salami, the commander-in-chief of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
According to Iranian state media, confirmed separately by Reuters and CNN, the attack occurred overnight on Friday (13 June) and struck the IRGC headquarters in Tehran, where General Salami was present at the time.
General Salami had led the elite force since 2019 and played a pivotal role in shaping Iran’s military and nuclear strategies. Under his leadership, the IRGC extended Iran’s regional influence through operations in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.
Following the announcement of his death, Iranian military officials and the IRGC vowed retaliation. The killing has triggered strong reactions across the country, with heightened tensions reported.
The IRGC is widely regarded as a powerful branch of Iran’s armed forces, wielding significant political, economic, and military influence. It also oversees critical aspects of Iran’s nuclear program and regional military initiatives.
