An Israeli airstrike on Monday in Tehran, the capital of Iran, damaged several buildings including the residences of officials working at the Bangladesh Embassy. At least one house belonging to a Bangladeshi diplomat was completely destroyed in the attack.
Oalid Islam, the First Secretary of the Bangladesh Embassy in Tehran, confirmed the incident, saying, “My house was completely destroyed.” Fortunately, he was not present at the time of the strike.
Bangladeshi embassy officials are housed in the Jordan area of Tehran’s District 3, which also includes key infrastructure such as the Iranian state television building — one of the declared Israeli targets. Prior to the airstrike, local authorities issued an evacuation order for the area.
“There is nothing left around us now,” Oalid said. “Only a few houses of diplomats remain, but the surroundings have been completely devastated.”
Following the announcement by Israeli forces of an imminent strike on District 3, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka ordered the immediate evacuation of all Bangladeshi nationals, including mission officials. Embassy staff left the compound and have since been relocated to safer areas in Tehran.
As the scope of the conflict escalates, Bangladesh’s foreign ministry is now working on a plan to evacuate its citizens from Tehran altogether.
“We are concerned about the safety of our nationals in Tehran,” Acting Foreign Secretary Ruhul Alam Siddique told a press conference in Dhaka on Tuesday. “We are making arrangements to ensure the safety of both embassy staff and Bangladeshi residents.”
Officials estimate that around 400 Bangladeshi nationals currently reside in Tehran. The foreign ministry confirmed that all are unharmed so far.
The latest conflict began on Friday when Israel launched a wave of pre-dawn airstrikes across Iran, targeting over 100 locations including nuclear facilities, missile sites, and high-ranking military personnel. The attack marked the beginning of a dangerous escalation between the two countries.
Since then, both sides have exchanged repeated strikes. Iran’s health ministry reported 224 deaths and over 1,270 injuries as of Tuesday, while Israeli authorities have confirmed 23 civilian fatalities and nearly 60 injuries.
The widening conflict has raised international concern, with diplomatic missions and civilians increasingly caught in the crossfire.
