A total of 220 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the onset of relentless Israeli assaults, marking a grave violation of press freedom amid one of the deadliest conflicts in recent history.
Israeli attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip have claimed the lives of 220 journalists over the past 19 months, according to Gaza’s Media Office, with confirmation from Al Jazeera and Anadolu Agency. Among the latest casualties is Ashraf Abu Nar, who was killed in an Israeli strike on Sunday, May 25.
Since October 2023, Israel has carried out continuous military operations in Gaza, sparing few moments of ceasefire. The relentless bombardments have devastated not only civilian infrastructure but also targeted journalists and media workers. On Sunday alone, intense shelling in Khan Younis, Jabalia, and Nuseirat left at least 23 Palestinians dead.
The Gaza Health Ministry reports that over 54,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began—most of them women and children. More than 123,000 have been injured. Amidst the carnage, journalists, civilians, and rescue teams have faced insurmountable challenges.
Due to severe shortages of emergency supplies, Gaza’s Civil Defense officials say thousands have died under rubble without rescue. Mohammed Al-Mughayyir noted that at least 9,700 people perished in such conditions, as responders lacked the means to save them.
This humanitarian disaster, compounded by the silencing of the press, has raised fresh alarms globally. Targeting journalists not only obstructs the flow of information but also represents a serious breach of international human rights laws.
As the war drags on, global calls are growing louder for decisive action. The international community is being urged to take a firm stand in defense of humanity, justice, and the fundamental right to life and information.
