Israel’s recent surprise attack on Iran appears to have gone beyond just delaying Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. According to analysts, the scale and choice of targets suggest a deeper strategic goal undermining the Iranian regime itself.

The strikes, carried out early Friday, hit not only Iran’s nuclear sites and missile facilities but also key military commanders and scientists, signaling an attempt to weaken the regime’s credibility both domestically and regionally.

Michael Singh of the Washington Institute, a former official under President George W. Bush, noted, “One assumes that one of the reasons Israel is doing this is to see regime change. It would like to see the people of Iran rise up.”

In a video address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directly appealed to the Iranian people, calling for their “liberation” and promising renewed friendship between the two nations. He likened Iran’s situation to past Israeli actions that contributed to political changes in Lebanon and Syria.

Despite heavy damage to Iranian air defenses and nuclear infrastructure, experts remain cautious about whether such actions could ignite enough public unrest to challenge Tehran’s deeply entrenched leadership. Iran’s ruling establishment still holds significant support from its security forces and religious institutions.

The assault, described by Israel as the beginning of a prolonged operation, is expected to continue targeting Iran’s nuclear capabilities. While Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is solely for civilian use, the UN nuclear watchdog recently reported violations of the global non-proliferation treaty.

Israel’s embassy in Washington said the future of Iran “can only be determined by the Iranian people,” echoing Israel’s democratic stance. Meanwhile, the White House has supported Israel’s defense but has not openly backed any effort to topple Iran’s government.
