Italy has expressed a strong interest in recruiting more skilled workers from Bangladesh, citing the positive performance of existing Bangladeshi laborers in the European country. The announcement came during a bilateral meeting on Monday at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Dhaka.

The discussion was held between visiting Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and Bangladesh’s Home Affairs Adviser, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. Following the meeting, the adviser told reporters that Italian employers are pleased with the skills and work ethic of Bangladeshi workers, prompting Italy to seek further labor cooperation.

“After the Middle East, Italy employs the highest number of Bangladeshi workers in Europe. The Italian minister emphasized the importance of legal migration and discouraged workers from entering Italy through illegal means such as via Libya or sea routes,” said Chowdhury. He added that he urged the minister to consider legalizing undocumented Bangladeshis already residing in Italy.

On a separate note, the adviser confirmed that 54 people have been detained in connection with the recent attack on Hasnat Abdullah, the chief organizer (southern region) of the National Citizen Party (NCP). He assured that no one involved in such violence would be spared, now or in the future.
