Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has urged the nation to observe February 21 as International Mother Language and Martyrs’ Day with discussions and prayers to honor the language martyrs.

In a statement on Thursday, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman highlighted the significance of February 21, remembering the 1952 student movement where young people fought for Bengali to be recognized as the state language. On that day, police opened fire on protesters, killing many, including students from Dhaka University.

He expressed respect for the sacrifices made by these martyrs and prayed for their souls. Dr. Rahman emphasized the need to protect and promote the Bengali language at all levels of society, ensuring its use and safeguarding it from foreign cultural and educational influence.

Liberty News’ political correspondent states that he also pointed out that as the country moves past fascism and embraces true freedom, it is important for citizens to fight for democracy, rule of law, human rights, and the right to vote. He urged Jamaat-e-Islami branches and the people of Bangladesh to come together and observe the day with meaningful discussions and prayers.
