Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has expressed gratitude and satisfaction following the Appellate Division’s verdict that reinstated the party’s registration, calling it a restoration of justice after a long legal struggle.
In an official statement issued on Sunday (June 1), Dr. Rahman said the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division has granted Jamaat-e-Islami the right to operate as a registered political party once again. He offered thanks to Allah and hailed the verdict as a victory for justice.
“After more than a decade of continuous legal battles, Jamaat has finally regained its rightful position. This verdict brings an end to a prolonged chapter of oppression,” said Dr. Rahman.
He emphasized that Jamaat-e-Islami had participated in national elections under the Dhapipalla (scales) symbol both before and after the enactment of the Political Party Registration Rules of 2008. The party, he said, had consistently followed all legal procedures set by the Election Commission.
Jamaat was officially registered on November 4, 2008. However, on January 25, 2009, a petition was filed by a particular group in the High Court seeking cancellation of its registration. On August 1, 2013, the High Court delivered a split verdict cancelling the registration. Jamaat then appealed to the Supreme Court, which has now unanimously ruled in favor of the party, restoring its registration.
“This verdict paves the way for people to exercise their right to vote freely and marks a significant step forward for Bangladesh’s democratic political process,” said Dr. Rahman.
He also expressed hope that the ruling will introduce a new dimension to national politics, allowing Jamaat to contribute again as a recognized political entity.
