In a rare high-level meeting, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman met with BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in London, accompanied by acting BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman and Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Abu Taher.
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, following his return from a European tour, visited BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at her son Tarique Rahman’s residence in London. The meeting was also attended by Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Abu Taher and Tarique Rahman himself.
The development was confirmed through a Facebook post by Maruf Kamal Khan Sohel, former press secretary to Khaleda Zia. In his verified post, Maruf Kamal noted that the leaders engaged in a lengthy meeting but did not disclose specific topics discussed during the interaction.
Khaleda Zia is currently residing in London for advanced medical treatment at her son’s home. The nature of the meeting has sparked political speculation in Dhaka’s political circles, with analysts debating whether it signals a potential shift in alliance dynamics or was merely a courtesy call.
Adding to the intrigue, Maruf Kamal mentioned that prior to her departure for the UK, the Chief of Army Staff, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, also paid a visit to Khaleda Zia along with his spouse. However, no detailed information about that meeting was made public either.
Observers now await possible political ripple effects from these high-profile meetings, as questions swirl about the future direction of BNP-Jamaat relations in the evolving political landscape.
