Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Shafiqur Rahman has reacted strongly to Indian Nobel laureate Amartya Sen’s recent comments on Bangladesh, calling his remarks on internal matters unwarranted.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Shafiqur Rahman expressed dissatisfaction with Amartya Sen’s interview with India’s PTI news agency, where the economist discussed various issues concerning Bangladesh, including challenges to Professor Muhammad Yunus’s government, allegations of minority persecution, and the idea of banning the ousted Awami League.

Rahman criticized Sen for “meddling in Bangladesh’s internal affairs” and suggested that Sen should focus on addressing the issues in the society he lives in. He also rejected Sen’s comments on Bangladesh’s secularism and political dynamics, labeling them as surprising and unacceptable. Rahman accused the Awami League of being responsible for persecuting minorities in the country, calling them the “monsters” behind such actions.

Liberty News’ political correspondent states that regarding Jamaat-e-Islami, Rahman dismissed Sen’s views as misguided, emphasizing that the reality was entirely different from what Sen had claimed. He further stated that the patriotic people of Bangladesh do not appreciate foreign interference in their internal matters.
