Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has endorsed the proposal to bar any individual from serving more than two terms as Prime Minister, while demanding the complete elimination of pluralism from the constitution.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami agreed with the Consensus Commission’s recommendation to limit the office of Prime Minister to a maximum of two terms, the party’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher announced on Saturday.
Speaking after a discussion session held at the LD Hall of the National Parliament, Dr. Taher said that Jamaat also proposed enshrining full faith and trust in Allah within the constitution. A ten-member delegation from Jamaat participated in the meeting, which continued until 5:15 PM but concluded without finalizing all points, necessitating further dialogue.
“We are not rushing. Our goal is to achieve significant reforms,” Dr. Taher stated. “The Commission also aims to reach vital and necessary reforms for the nation.”
He mentioned that Jamaat accepted several proposals and suggested amendments in others. Among their agreements was the amendment of Article 70, allowing members of Parliament to act independently of party positions except in matters concerning constitutional amendments, financial bills, and votes of confidence.
Dr. Taher also revealed that Jamaat supported the formation of a National Constitutional Council but advised against including the President and the Chief Justice in its structure.
Regarding elections, he emphasized the need for adopting a Proportional Representation (PR) system to curb corruption, electoral fraud, and unopposed victories, noting that around 60 countries globally use this system. Jamaat reiterated its support for a bicameral legislature.
Highlighting the focus of the day’s discussion, Dr. Taher said, “Today’s talks were primarily centered on constitutional issues. Further discussions will address how constitutional amendments should be carried out.” He added that debates on women’s reserved seats remain inconclusive.
Moreover, Jamaat firmly demanded the complete exclusion of pluralism and proposed reaffirming full faith in Allah within the constitutional framework.
