Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed hope for swift justice after the High Court upheld the death sentences for 20 individuals involved in the brutal murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad. The party believes the rapid execution of the verdict will ensure justice for the victim’s family.
In a statement issued on Sunday (March 16), Jamaat’s Secretary-General and former MP, Professor Mia Golam Parwar, emphasized that the gruesome killing of Abrar on the night of October 6, 2019, by a group of Chhatra League leaders in the Sher-e-Bangla Hall of BUET should lead to swift legal closure. He recalled that after the case was filed by Abrar’s father, a charge sheet was formed on September 15, 2020, and following the trial, the court sentenced 20 people to death and 5 others to life imprisonment on December 8, 2021.
Liberty News’ political correspondent states that the party expressed satisfaction with the High Court’s decision to uphold the sentences, calling it a step toward ensuring justice for Abrar. Parwar also urged for the immediate execution of the sentence to provide closure for the bereaved family and to mark another milestone in the country’s legal process.
