Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said holding a general election under the current socio-political conditions in the country is “impossible” unless significant reforms are introduced and a level playing field is ensured.
Speaking to reporters at Saidpur domestic airport on Friday morning, the Jamaat leader said, “Before going to polls, it must be ensured that all candidates have equal rights and opportunities. Fundamental reforms in key sectors must be implemented.”
Citing recent unrest, he said the country is currently gripped by political violence. Referring to this week’s attack on a police station in Patgram, Lalmonirhat, he said, “Incidents like these reflect the prevailing instability. How can elections be held in such an atmosphere?”
Shafiqur Rahman reiterated Jamaat-e-Islami’s support for a free, fair and inclusive election but stressed that the existing conditions are far from ideal. “Without ensuring political stability and equal participation, an election will not reflect the people’s true mandate,” he added.
