Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has strongly condemned the violent attack on the National Citizens’ Party (NCP)’s pre-announced “March to Gopalganj” rally, terming it a “heinous assault on democracy.”
In a statement issued Wednesday, Jamaat Secretary General and former MP Prof. Mia Golam Porwar said the attack, allegedly carried out by supporters of the former Awami League government, was aimed at silencing democratic opposition.
“Despite NCP’s coordination with the local administration, armed goons associated with the toppled fascist regime launched an unprovoked attack involving cocktails, arson, and vandalism,” the statement said.
Porwar expressed concern over the “passivity” of law enforcement during the incident and stressed that Gopalganj must not be treated as beyond the reach of national law and order.
He added that the “remnants of Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year iron-fisted rule” continue to incite instability, despite her ouster during the 5 August people’s uprising.
Jamaat also claimed vehicles belonging to local administration and law enforcement were torched during the violence, leaving several officers injured. Porwar wished them a swift recovery and urged authorities to arrest and prosecute those responsible.
