The Appellate Division has set Tuesday for the hearing of the review petition against the death sentence of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam in the war crimes case.
On Sunday (February 23), the Appellate Division, led by Justice Mohammad Ashfaqul Islam, set the date for the hearing. The matter was presented in court by Attorney General Mohammad Asaduzzaman. During the hearing, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam and Azhar’s lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir were present. He has been accused of committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
Liberty News court correspondent reports that on December 30, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Azhar to death by hanging. On January 28, 2015, his lawyers appealed, claiming his innocence with 113 reasons and sought his acquittal.
However, on October 23, 2019, the Appellate Division upheld the death sentence in the case of crimes against humanity. He had filed a review petition against this verdict as well.
