ATM Azharul Islam, the then assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, was released from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on Wednesday morning.
Around 9:30 AM, he walked out of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) where he had been undergoing treatment for the last few months. His party leaders and activists welcomed him at the BMU gate, DIG Prisons Md Jahangir Kabir confirmed the matter to media.
After release, ATM Azharul went to Shahbagh directly to join a public rally there.
On Tuesday (May 27), ATM Azharul was acquitted by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court in a case over crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
