Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is set to regain its political registration and traditional election symbol, the Scales (Dāripalla), as confirmed by Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah on Wednesday.
Following a meeting at the Election Commission Secretariat in Agargaon, Commissioner Sanaullah announced that necessary steps are being taken to restore Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration.
“Jamaat-e-Islami will soon get back its registration. The Election Commission has made a decision in this regard,” he told reporters.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin presided over the meeting, which was attended by other commissioners and senior EC officials.
Commissioner Sanaullah also confirmed that the EC has taken a policy decision to reinstate Jamaat’s election symbol — the Scales.
Responding to queries about recent political controversies involving Ishraque Hossain, he clarified that the EC’s responsibilities end with the publication of the official election gazette and do not extend to administering oaths.
The move follows a Supreme Court decision overturning the 2013 High Court ruling that had revoked Jamaat’s registration on constitutional grounds.
