Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher on Monday said the party has called for Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus to declare that the 13th parliamentary election will be cancelled if it is not conducted fairly.
“The call was made during a meeting between Prof Yunus and the party recently,” he said while addressing a roundtable discussion in the capital.
BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and leaders from various political parties attended the event titled “Inclusive and Fair National Parliamentary Election: Expectations of Civil Society from Political Parties.”
Taher said, “The Jamaat delegation urged the chief adviser to hold talks with mainstream political parties, where the government would commit to ensuring a fair election. During the talks, the parties would pledge not to violate the electoral code of conduct, and this would be broadcast on television for the nation to see.”
He said the party suggested that if the election is still not held fairly, the chief adviser should cancel it and announce a new one to the nation.
