Bangladesh captain Jamal Bhuyan, who has not regularly featured in the starting XI in recent matches, addressed his role ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Nepal, emphasizing the strength of the hosts as well as his team’s determination to secure victory.
Speaking in a press conference ahead of the first friendly match at the Dasharatha Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu, Jamal highlighted the significance of the upcoming fixtures.
“We had been waiting for these two matches because they are very important for us. Next month, we have the Asian Cup qualifiers against Hong Kong. So, these two matches are extremely important for us. We are eager to play,” he said.
Regarding his own participation, Jamal reiterated his previous reasoning.
“Whether I will play or not, that is not in my hands. It is a decision for the team management. But of course, as a player, everyone wants to play. In our team, there is good competition, and football itself means competition. Only by giving my absolute best can I perhaps earn a place in the squad,” Jamal added.
The captain also commented on domestic football in Bangladesh.
“I think for every country it is necessary to have a strong league. If there is a strong league, then the local players will improve. And the country’s football will also improve. A strong league means good infrastructure, good stadiums, and good facilities. I hope Nepal will also move forward in the same direction,” Jamal said.
Praising Nepal’s recent performances, the captain added, “I think Nepal has become stronger, especially judging by their performance against Singapore. Going to Singapore and playing there is not easy. And for opponents, coming here to play has always been difficult.”
Despite acknowledging the challenge, Jamal made Bangladesh’s goal clear.
“Everyone’s expectation is the same—we have come here for three points. You can ask any player, and you will get the same answer. We have come to win, but at the same time, to perform well and to show ourselves and the spectators that we are improving, especially for next month. Next month is the most important for us.”
Bangladesh will take on Nepal in two friendlies on 6 and 9 September in Kathmandu, with the matches serving as a key preparation for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup qualifiers against Hong Kong.
