A three-storey government primary school building in Manikganj was swept into the Jamuna River on Saturday afternoon following intense erosion triggered by rising water levels and strong currents.

The Bharanga Government Primary School, located in Bachamara Union, became the latest victim of riverbank erosion as the Jamuna’s surging flow undermined the foundation of the structure, causing it to collapse entirely into the river.

Md Khorshed Alam, Executive Engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) in Manikganj, confirmed the incident and attributed the collapse to severe erosion that has intensified in recent days.

Local residents reported a sharp rise in water levels over the past week, leading to continuous erosion along the riverbank. Despite attempts by locals to salvage school property, only lighter furniture items such as chairs and tables were recovered. Heavier items, including steel furniture, were lost to the river.

Wazed Ali Sarkar, member of Ward No. 5 under Bachamara Union Parishad, expressed concern over the growing threat of erosion in the area, saying urgent measures are needed to protect remaining infrastructure and local livelihoods.

Authorities are assessing the damage and exploring alternative arrangements for students, who are now left without a school building just as the academic year is underway.
