The Jagannath University (JnU) administration has announced two days of mourning in memory of Md Jobayed Hossain, suspending all activities of the 20th founding anniversary of the University scheduled to be observed on Tuesday.
The decision was announced by the Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Rezaul Karim on Monday during a virtual meeting attended by university officials, teachers, student leaders, and journalists.
Prof Rezaul Karim said all exams will be suspended on 21 and 22 October to observe the mourning days, where the first day will feature mourning sessions and the second day will include a university-wide mourning rally. All University Day events and ceremonies are also postponed.
“Jobayed’s death has deeply saddened us. We will not stop until the murder is properly investigated,” he added.
Jobayed, a postgraduate student of the Statistics Department (2019–20 session) at Jagannath University and a member of the convening committee of the university unit of Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal, was stabbed to death on the staircase of a house in Old Dhaka’s Armanitola area, where he had gone to give tuition on Sunday afternoon.
Students of the university staged demonstrations in front of Banshal Police Station, set fires, and blocked the Tatibazar intersection, demanding the immediate arrest of the killers.
At around 11pm, police took Barsha into custody from her residence after extensive questioning. Jobayed’s body was sent to Mitford Hospital for autopsy at 10:50pm.
