Journalist couple Shakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa have been placed on a 5-day remand in connection with a murder case filed by the Mirpur police in a case related to an anti-discrimination movement.

On Monday, after hearing the plea, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq issued the order for their remand.

During the hearing, Inspector Nasir Uddin Sarkar of CID filed the remand application, with State Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi supporting it. There were no lawyers present for the defense. The judge later gave the order for remand.

According to the case details, Anwar Hossain Patowary was shot and killed in the Golchattar area of Mirpur on the day of the fall of the Awami League government. His father, Al Amin Patowary, filed the murder case at the Mirpur Model Police Station.

Farzana Rupa is the former Principal Correspondent for private television station Ekattor Television, while Shakil was the former Head of News at the same channel.

After a change in power, the couple was arrested while attempting to leave the country on August 21 at Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport. They were later arrested in connection with a murder case at the Adabar Police Station, where they were interrogated during two remands.
