The Jahangirnagar University unit of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on Sunday held a sit-in protest, urging the swift arrest and trial of those responsible for the gang rape of a Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) student in Savar.

The protest was held around 5:00pm at the university’s Central Shaheed Minar premises.

Addressing the event, Kazi Afroze Mousumi, a member of the JU Chhatra Dal convening committee, said, “After the July movement, we had dreamt that our sisters would be safe on campus and across the country. But over the past year, more than three thousand rape incidents have occurred, including the case of Achiya, Bogura. We demand justice for our sister, and the government must take strict action to meet the demands raised by BUP students.”

JU Chhatra Dal Convener Zahir Uddin Mohammad Babor said, “Today we are here to condemn the gang rape of the BUP student in Savar. The culture of impunity over the past 17 years has encouraged continued rape, injustice, and lawlessness in the country.”

“We, after the July Uprising, had hoped for change through the interim government, but it too has failed to ensure women’s safety, justice, and law and order. We demand the immediate arrest and execution of those involved in the BUP’s rape incident,” he added.
