Students of Jagannath University (JU), while staging a protest over unmet demands, threw a bottle at Adviser Mahfuz Alam during his briefing, prompting him to leave the scene immediately.
Tensions flared on Wednesday when JU students, protesting near Kakrail Mosque crossing, targeted Adviser Mahfuz Alam with a water bottle as he addressed them alongside Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Rezaul Karim. The students were angered by delays in addressing their three-point demand and showed their frustration by chanting slogans and throwing a bottle, which hit Mahfuz on the head.
Mahfuz had begun speaking to the crowd, stating, “A particular group, whom I believe to be saboteurs, infiltrated the protest to disrupt it.” Moments later, he was interrupted by the bottle incident and quickly withdrew from the area without completing his remarks.
Earlier in the day, police had blocked JU students from marching toward the residence of Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Refusing to back down, the students held their ground at Kakrail despite heavy rain, vowing to continue the demonstration until their demands were met.
Vice-Chancellor Rezaul Karim said that the students’ concerns had been communicated to the University Grants Commission (UGC). “The UGC Chairman said he would raise the issue with the Chief Adviser. He acknowledged the students’ hardships and assured that the matter would be taken into consideration,” he told reporters.
Students claimed they had discussed the issue with Adviser Mahfuz the night before, and were promised that discussions involving the Education Adviser would be arranged. However, dissatisfaction over delayed action led to heightened emotions and the dramatic confrontation.
