Jubo Dal Leader Shot Dead in Chattogram

Md Selim, former member secretary of Kadalpur Union Jubo Dal, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the Ishan Bhatt Hat area of Kadalpur Union under Raozan upazila on Sunday noon.

Selim, son of Amir Hossain from Shamserpara (Ward-7), was known to be a close associate of Golam Akbar Khandaker, convener of Chattogram North District BNP.

According to Selim’s cousin Md Riduan, the incident took place shortly after Selim attended his aunt’s Namaz-e-Janaza. While he was riding a motorcycle with his wife, Ferdous Akhter, and daughter to buy medicine, a group of 4-5 attackers — including two in burqas — intercepted them in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw. The assailants shot Selim in the head before fleeing the scene.

Locals rushed Selim to Raozan Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

“We were at Ishan Bhatt Hat Bazar to buy medicine after the funeral. Two people in burqas shot my husband in the head and escaped in a CNG,” Ferdous Akhter said. “My daughter and I fell off the motorcycle. I recognised one of the attackers as Dama Ilyas and I can identify the others if I see them again.”

Local sources suspect the killing may be linked to a turf dispute, as Selim had been active in local Jubo Dal politics.

Raozan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam Bhuiyan confirmed the incident, adding that the body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Since August 5 last year, Raozan upazila has witnessed at least 13 killings, with 10 believed to be politically motivated. Internal clashes within BNP factions have reportedly taken place over 100 times, leaving more than 300 people shot.
