Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday called on the people of Bangladesh to observe the July Uprising annually, with the goal of resisting any resurgence of authoritarianism in the country.
“We will observe this every year so that we don’t have to wait 16 years to uproot dictatorship again,” Prof Yunus said while inaugurating a month-long programme commemorating the July Uprising, from his office in the capital.
“This is important,” he added. “So that we can catch autocracy before it even sprouts a leaf. So that we can eliminate it at its roots.”
Prof Yunus described July as a historic turning point when the youth-led movement sparked an unprecedented mass uprising, offering the people a fresh taste of freedom and hope.
He highlighted that the true spirit of the uprising was not just about toppling a regime, but about rebuilding the state: “The essence of the movement was—build a new Bangladesh by eliminating fascism and returning the state to the people.”
The Chief Adviser urged citizens to treat this month as more than a remembrance: “This is not just about emotions or anger. It is a renewed oath—a call to uphold democratic rights, demand accountability, and carry forward reforms secured through immense sacrifice.”
He paid tribute to the courage and resilience of all who took to the streets, especially students, rickshaw pullers, workers, and everyday citizens, many of whom were martyred or injured in the struggle.
“The unity that was forged across social classes and professions last year must be rekindled again this July,” he said.
He stressed that the upcoming July–August activities will serve to reignite the public consciousness of the movement and take fresh vows to realize its vision.
Prof Yunus expressed his belief that “when people awaken, no force can stand against them,” and called upon the nation to transform July into a month of unity, awareness, and resistance.
As part of the inaugural event, the Chief Adviser also unveiled a QR code linked to the programme’s digital campaign and handed over scholarship cheques to three National University students.
Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki and Education Adviser CR Abrar were also present and spoke during the occasion.
