A heartbreaking story of abuse and resilience has come to light in Dhaka, where 13-year-old Kalpana Akter, a domestic worker, endured months of brutal torture. Beaten with rods, sticks, and burned with hot objects, she suffered unimaginable cruelty, including the loss of four teeth during the assaults.
Kalpana was rescued three months ago from a flat at 466, Road No. 3, Vatara, Dhaka, after her condition drew the attention of concerned neighbors. Following her rescue, she was admitted to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she underwent extensive treatment for 100 days.
Journalist Eshtiak Emon recently shared an update on her recovery through a heartfelt Facebook post, which quickly went viral. In his post, he expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported Kalpana, writing: “I may not have any great achievements in life, but helping people gives me the greatest sense of accomplishment. Kalpana, who faced horrific abuse, is now healthy and heading home after 100 days of treatment. I hope she begins a new, beautiful chapter in life.”
Speaking to Liberty News’ national affairs correspondent, Kalpana recounted the horrifying details of her abuse. Her employer, Ador, routinely assaulted her for alleged mistakes. He used a wooden brush to break her teeth and burned her face with a hot hair straightener. She was denied medical care, confined indoors, and often given only one meal a day. Despite her suffering, Kalpana’s story is now one of survival and hope. As she returns home, her case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of domestic abuse and the need for stronger protections for vulnerable individuals.
