BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed optimism that the return of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia will ease Bangladesh’s path toward democratic transition.

Speaking to journalists at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday morning, Mirza Fakhrul stated that Khaleda Zia’s homecoming marks a significant moment for the nation. “Today is a day of joy for us and the country,” he said. “Her return will ease the democratic transition and help guide the nation toward a just, inclusive path.”

The BNP chief noted that Khaleda Zia had been a victim of prolonged political persecution under a fascist regime. Following her release, she traveled abroad for advanced medical treatment and is now returning after nearly four months.

Joining her on the journey were her two daughters-in-law — Dr. Zubaida Rahman and Syeda Sharmila Rahman. Notably, this marks Dr. Zubaida Rahman’s first return to Bangladesh in 17 years since her departure on September 11, 2008.

Khaleda Zia departed from London’s Heathrow Airport at 9:35 PM Bangladesh time on Monday aboard a royal air ambulance provided by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. She was seen off at the airport by BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman and several senior party leaders.

Her arrival is being viewed by BNP as a symbolic boost to the party’s ongoing struggle for democracy in Bangladesh.
